Sooooooo, having lived in France for over 11 years, I believe I have tried hundreds and hundreds of croissants on my travels all over the country. My first love was from a bakery in Paris called “Tout au Beurre”…..you could smell butter as you walked towards the store and I would giddily walk away with a little paper bag already stained from the butter exuding from their croissants. There are no words to describe the flavor and texture of those just-baked pillows of goodness. They are no longer there. It is a treasured memory.
Now that I live almost full time in the Hamptons, of course I am always searching for “the one”. And in many ways I have found “the one”. Each “one” is so different, yet so good!!!
So today I am doing a croissant crawl with you to share my loved “ones”. Let me know what you think and if you have found ones I should know about and can share with others. I am rating them.
My number one pick for croissants:
50 Sagg Main Street, Sagaponack
In my opinion, these are the best plain croissants in the Hamptons. They are buttery and light and tender and have memorable flavor, as good as any good ones you get in France.
My second stop for croissants would be:
2493 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton
Have you tried their almond croissants? Or their chocolate almond croissants? Small in size, very big in flavor and very generous in ingredients. What I particularly love are the salted whole hazelnuts and sliced almonds in a mound on the top of each one, making them salty and crunchy as well as sweet. Paired with their cardamom coffee it has to be one of my favorite breakfasts out here. A really big treat.
My third pick (for croissants) would be:
Armin & Judy (bakery in back of restaurant)
1970 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton
As of this moment, in my opinion, they make the best baguette in the Hamptons. Excellent. Triple fermentation with great crumb and crisp crust. I eat mine with a generous slab of unsalted French butter.
Their croissants are lovely, especially the almost perfect almond croissants (see above). The staff told me the croissants are made with French butter, so there you go. Other specialties to tempt you are fermented sourdough breads with a choice of seeds, olives, walnut, raisin and more, pain au chocolate, brioche Parisienne, Rugbrød Rye, Pumpernickel, Ciabatta, Pain au Lait, ham and cheese croissant, 20 count blueberry muffins, Kouign-Amann, and coconut macaroons.
And my fourth pick for plain croissants would be:
30 Main Street, Southampton
The reason I love their plain croissants is that they have a very slight flavor of orange. I like to slice them in half, layer on a slab of sweet French butter, then a generous layer of orange marmalade. Heaven.
Of course, all of their cookies and pastries and really special, so when I go I usually take home more than I planned to.
