I am not a doctor. I am not an expert at health related topics. But I have read all over the internet, on social media, and from people I meet, that there are ways to use food to protect yourself from some diseases, specifically cancer. I am healthy now, but vow to stay that way! The two foods that I am hearing about repeatedly are ginger (apparently effective at killing cancer cells in their tracks) and soursop.
But what is soursop? I had never heard of it.
Wikipedia said: “Soursop is widely promoted (sometimes as "graviola") as an alternative cancer treatment, but there is no reliable medical evidence it is effective for treating cancer or any disease.[7]”
But what if I just like the taste? What’s wrong, I thought, with enjoying it once or twice a week, and if there is a miraculous benefit, well, wonderful! At least I am on the side of trying. Right? Just in case it does work? I am thinking that anything that might counter-act all the stress I have been experiencing the last few months and the crazy ingredients found in our foods when I dine out or take out is a good bet.
Besides being claimed as a cancer remedy, Graviola (soursop) is a known broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, and is effective against internal parasites and worms. It’s also extremely high in Vitamin C.
I went through the same thought process with Kambucha tea, which is also considered an alternative “medicine”, but I didn’t like the taste.
Remember, I am not recommending anything or saying that I am an expert. This discourse is merely a meandering through my thoughts and a sharing of my way of viewing food. I would love to read your comments or any information you have to give about soursop, or any alternative remedies that have worked for you, from food alone.
Food is my passion, not only as entertainment and the joy I get in making it, but also as a nutrient and health-keeper.
“According to Cancer Research UK, graviola extracts can kill some types of liver and breast cancer cells in laboratory studies. These cells are resistant to some chemotherapy drugs. A more recent study showed that graviola pulp extract has an effect on prostate cancer cells in mice. But there have not been any studies in humans”
So I love the taste of it. Where do I find it?
Well, Goya (see picture above) offers pulp only, nothing added, frozen soursop in most supermarkets that sell frozen Goya products. What’s fun is they also sell mango pulp and passionfruit pulp in the same way so I grab all three and throw them in the freezer then when I make a smoothie I break off a piece and add it to the blender. Delicious!
And I often add soursop leaves when I brew green tea or crumble one into my French press coffee along with the coffee grinds.

Book review:
Eat Real to Heal shows you how to create and follow a meal plan that utilizes nutritious, vegan recipes, made with pure and organic ingredients, that are quick, easy, and delicious. It also covers topics like juicing, managing stress, detoxifying your home, breathing exercises, and yoga.
I like this one as a basic starter book. I have been using it and have benefited from its guidance. It follows the “Gerson method” and reminds me of the home remedies my grandmother successfully used with us when we were children.
